Carnauba Wax for releasing Fiberglass Molds

As this is my first post, I would like to start by giving the best tip that I have gotten to date when making fiberglass molds - Carnauba Wax. If you haven't heard of Carnauba, or Carnuba, Wax before, what about Turtle Wax, Car Wax. Instead of using any number of different fiberglass waxes, try using carnauba. It's cheap and can be found at any hardware or home supply store. There is one catch to this though, it must be 100% pure carnauba. You don't want to buy the garbage that has additives in it. These additives may work well for cars, but it can be detrimental to fiberglass molds.

If the mold that you are using is brand new, start with a healthy dose of carnauba - of course, not all at one time. Apply the wax to your mold like you would apply it to a car. The key to this wax working properly is multiple coats. For brand new molds, you almost cant over do it. Make sure to use at least 5 coats, but as many as 20 coats will help your part release from its mold nice and clean.

One final note about carnauba wax, it smells good. While this is sort of an odd positive, in the world of fiberglass it's a welcomed change. No mask required, no gloves necessary - just a soft cloth to apply the wax is all you need.

Here's to clean breaks,
Pat
